NZ is the only national organisation in New Zealand that focuses purely on volunteering. It is important that within New Zealand there is an organisation that can be the “voice of volunteering”. One that has the ‘big picture’, that is in a position to liaise, work with, and advise government and that works to ensure that volunteering occurs within a positive environment where it is encouraged and fostered.

VNZ's current strategic plan reflects on that and provides new guidelines for both the board and staff on how to efficiently and effectively serve volunteering in New Zealand. While our past work has made a significant impact on volunteering in New Zealand, now we are looking to strengthen our profile and services; 'to raise the bar' by following our three guiding principles:

• Lead the initiatives and development of new opportunities which will strengthen supporting infrastructure and quality of volunteering
• Promote the importance of volunteering and its role in achieving active citizenship
• Represent the volunteering sector and ensure their interests and needs had been heard by policy makers and legislators
