Volunteering New Zealand’s 2022 Annual General meeting is being held on Monday 7 November at 12 pm. In the lead-up to this, we are now seeking nominations for election to our board. The experience and skills we are seeking, and the nomination process, are outlined below. We are seeking nominations for our Māori, Pasifika and Youth representatives.

Call for board nominations

Volunteering New Zealand is seeking nominations for three seats for Māori, Pasifika and Youth board member roles.

We are seeking people with governance expertise, that are also passionate about mahi aroha and volunteering. We are actively seeking candidates with the following skills or experience:

  • Strategic policy expertise and or significant strategic leadership experience
  • Senior government relationships or networks or experience
  • Understanding of systems or sector level advocacy
  • Financial or audit expertise
  • Technology or digital infrastructure expertise.

Youth board member nominations

Volunteering New Zealand is seeking nominations for our new Youth Board Member role. Experience working on a board or in governance is not necessary – we care more about your willingness to learn about governance. The ideal candidate will be:

  • Able to work collaboratively and determined to grow youth/rangatahi involvement within Volunteering New Zealand’s mahi;
  • Willing and eager to learn more about governance;
  • Able to demonstrate past or current experience as a volunteer, or working with mahi aroha in its many forms;
  • Passionate about service to communities.

The role of the Youth Board Member has identical voting rights and responsibilities as other Board Members at Volunteering New Zealand. Alongside this, they are expected to bring a unique youth perspective to discussions and work alongside the Youth Working Group.

The Youth Working Group is a group of 8-10 rangatahi from across Aotearoa who provide further guidance and insight to the Board from a young perspective. They assist Volunteering New Zealand in delivering better outcomes for young people/rangatahi in the sector, and work with the Youth Board Member in doing so.

There is an expectation that the Youth Board Member will be part of the Youth Working Group and hold a “Co-Chair” position alongside one other Youth Working Group member. Another Board Member will also sit in on Youth Working Group meetings.

The Youth Board Member is elected for a two year term, with the ability to be re-elected for another two year term. There is no minimum or maximum age for this position, however there is the expectation that this person is young and has experience as a young volunteer.

The role will require roughly 10 hours per month of volunteer time, but can vary depending on workload.

Length of service

Volunteering New Zealand board members can serve for up to two three-year terms.  An election process in accordance with our constitution will be conducted after nominations close. Our new youth board member role is for up to two two-year terms.

We particularly encourage nominations from tangata whenua and pasifika communities, younger members of the community and the LGBTIQ community.
